Remaining Addicted to Sobriety
During the Holidays
Staying addicted to sobriety can be especially difficult during the holidays. You may find yourself in the midst of many holiday events at which others are drinking alcohol or using drugs.
What can you do?
There are a few choices.
(1) Stay away from any event where there will be drugs or alcohol. Doesn't sound like much fun, but if the price you would pay to attend these functions would be loss of your sobriety, then it's just not worth it.
(2) Attend extra meetings and discuss your dilemma openly
(3) Ask your sponsor for suggestions and discuss your feelings and fears
(4) Take a "sober buddy" to any event you attend. Give them permission to watch you closely and remove you from the situation if your own resolve starts to weaken.
The holidays can still be a wonderful time of year. In fact, my best times have definitely been when I wasn't consuming alcohol or using drugs. So don't despair, but take any precautions you need to in order to hold on to the greatest gift you will ever receive ...your sobriety.
